Question by Adam K: Are meta tags still important for SEO?
If you are building a website and want to rank highly with the major search engines (Google, Yahoo), is it still important to have include meta tags for keywords, description, etc? Or are meta tags mostly ignored in favor of relevant links to your site, keyword density, and/or other features?

Nobody has the exact answer on how the search engines work, but it seems that Google at least doesn’t place any importance on the meta keywords tag. Description is important though, because it shows in the results page. Think of it as your quick pitch to get people to actually click on your link on the search results page.

As always though, the best tool in SEO is to have good content that people want to read (and share).

Question by Tica: Do I need to resubmit for SEO purposes once I optimize content and meta tags on my site?
If I work on the copy and on the meta tags of my home page and the sub pages on my web site, do I need to resubmit all urls to yahoo, msn, google etc. ?

If your site is already submitted then most of the time the spider will come back to index your site again. If you have a blog you can ping your blog or if you have a sitemap you can ping it and the spiders will come and look at your site again.

Pinging basically will notify those search engines and feed places of your changes on your site.

Put very simply, a Meta Tag is a piece of information that is sent to a web browser as part of your page, and which a search engine, when it is scanning your site, can read to try to figure out what your site is about. In the early days of the Web, these were extremely useful as an easy place for the search engine to look. But then people came along. And guess what? People always try to cheat. So the search engine operators found that they could not trust what was placed in the Meta Tags (porn sites would try to make it look like they were quite innocent, in order to get a listing), so they had to think of something else.

Then along came Google. They decided to rate a site based on a completely different set of criteria, so if you want to get on Google, Meta Tags aren’t going to help you, but for the other, older search engines, they still have a place.

There are two main types of Meta Tags, Description and Keywords. The Description Tag for your web page should contain a short description of what the page is about. The Keywords Tag for your web page should contain a list of key words that people might use when they enter a search into a search engine. The idea is that if your key words match what the user typed in to the search engine, your page should be listed.

Even though the Keywords Tag isn’t so important these days, the Description Tag will still be used by Google (and other engines) to display to the user on the search screen when they list your page – once it gets listed.

what you really need is then for the content, put in 10 or less keywords about your site.
another one is . put in a 1 sentence description of your site. doing these 2 things is 1 step to having a good SEO.

SEO Meta Tags Who Gives a Damn

To be honest, I still spend a little time creating meta tags, even though google, msn an the other big search engines does not use them anymore, or not quite true, some people claim that google still uses the desciption tag for something.

As I see it, using just a small amout of time and a small amout of effort writing them, can get you just a little longer in the process of optimizing, but not as search engines concern, i’m refering to sites such as website directories, and for some website submission sites, some of them perfere loading in your keywords and description tags from your website instead of letting you write them again.

So you see, write them for web directories and submissino sites, but don’t use hours of time trying to figure out what keyword sentences are best fit for your meta tags, just write some, use your common sense.

Instead keywords are more important for search engines as google, within your content text, also known as keyword desisity, eg. How often a speciffic keyword is repeated within a text, but don’t repeat a keyword to much, keep it realistic, do it as you would, for your visitors, its still their needs that are needed to be fulfilled.

There is alot of good tools out on the internet, but be carefull, you dont need to pay of these small tools, there are alot of freeware tools so programmers profit from advertising instead.
